Nicki Minaj vs Cardi B: Their Complicated Relationship Before Cardi Threw Her Shoe

If you haven’t been on the path of the notorious, and now-viral physical altercation between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, you’re definitely missing out. The drama went down when the two attended the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party at the Plaza Hotel during New York Fashion Week. The fight broke out a little after 11pm, and Cardi B was posing for a photo when Nicki walked by and intentionally stepped on Cardi’s gown, causing it to rip. Cardi took her shoe off and threw it at Nicki (she missed), and Nicki proceeded to pulling off Cardi’s wig.

Nicki reportedly remained cool throughout the encounter, but Cardi was escorted out by security. In other videos, Cardi can also be heard defending her daughter post-fight. Cardi has since taken to Instagram to air her grievances towards Nicki Minaj (not explicitly, but we all know).

Nicki Minaj didn’t immediately react, and even posted three pictures of herself from the party. Now, let’s go back to the beginning of their relationship. Cardi B and Nicki Minaj had always had tension, because they were always compared to each other, and they were in many ways competing with each other.

In March 2017, Nicki Minaj allegedly liked a comment dissing Cardi’s verses on a video of her rapping, but many users pointed out that it was probably fake. The comment read, “dumb a** bars”. But a few weeks later, she was spotted dancing to Cardi B’s ‘Bodak Yellow’. Things started heating up when Nicki released ‘No Flag’, where she threw shade at a female rapper, featuring Offset. “I heard these labels are trying to make another me / Everything you’re getting little hoe is because of me,” she says. Though she took to Twitter later to clarify that it wasn’t about Cardi B.

Later on, Cardi B took the ball in August 2017 when she called out an unnamed woman during a performance. “You know this b***h she never f**king liked me, and all of a sudden she want to be friends with me –– no, b***h,” she declared on stage. “I still don’t like you b***h.” Though later she denied any industry beef, or any beef with Nicki Minaj at all.

Enter Motorsport, where the two were both featured, it was released in October 2017. It was their first collaboration together, and both appeared in the official music video, but they were in separate scenes. That threw everyone off, and everyone believed they were better together than apart.

In 2018, right after the two were spotted exchanging pleasant conversation at the Met Gala, Nicki Minaj takes to Queen Radio to give Cardi B some back-handed advice. “To me, she may have taken an issue with things that I’ve said, but I’m not going to bite my tongue. You gotta have thick skin. People talk sh*t about me all the time. You can’t expect to be liked and loved and praised all the f*cking time. Give me a break.”

The tension between them had been so strong, it isn’t much of a shocker that an altercation would happen at an A-list party such as this. For the most part, celebrities are trying to stay neutral. Kelly Rowland, who was seen photographed with Nicki Minaj earlier that night, said, “There’s no time for us as women to fight and they are just so talented and I just genuinely love them both so much, but it’s just not the time. We have way bigger issues as women, you know what I mean?”

Among Cardi B’s “team” are Hailey Baldwin, Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, and Snooki, and Adriana Lima said in a since-deleted comment, “you got my support in this one.”

Nicki has also disputed the accusation of her talking about Cardi B’s daughter. She said on Queen Radio, “I would never discuss anyone’s child. It’s so sad for someone to pin that on me, because I’m the bad guy and they know people would believe them. I would never talk about anyone’s child or parenting.” She’s also addressed Cardi B directly on her radio, “You’re angry and you’re sad. Get this woman some f**king help! This woman is having the best days of her career, and you’re out here… throwing shoes? Who the f**k is gonna give her an intervention?”

The two artists have long been trying to deny their feud, claiming that either of them “don’t have time for industry beef”. Clearly, they can’t deny this now. The question is, who’s the winner here? And who is the loser?
